NFB-NYS CONVENTION

Every year the Parent Division (POBCNY) has a conference for parents, educators and youngsters (under 1 to 21) as part of the larger convention event. Every year we try to bring you something new and different. We also try to expand and improve upon the permanent pieces of our agenda.

I am more excited by this year’s POBCNY conference schedule than ever before. The morning’s agenda will include a series of presenters and speakers on topics that span the educational spectrum. In the afternoon we will break-out into smaller groups for a series of workshops and discussion groups including break-out groups for teens and young adults. We have improved upon the “cane walk” for kids and adults and have added on a life skills training segment to be taught under sleep shades. We have added on sibling events that will provide brothers and sisters a chance to bond with others whose experience is like their own. We have turned the technology segment into a workshop with hands on tech-teaching plus much more. We also have a full and exciting schedule of activities and educational programs for younger children.

As always the weekend will include great educational opportunities and chances to network at every turn. There will be fabulous door prizes, a fund raising sale of children’s designer clothing and a 50/50 raffle. This year we will also feature a Halloween Costume Party Friday evening, a luncheon for students and adults Saturday afternoon and a Banquet Saturday night. Childcare will be available all weekend for all events.

This is a must do weekend event for you and your family. See you there!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE POBCNY PR 2008-01

JULY 7, 2008

THE POBCNY PROUDLY ANNOUNCES

“EMERGENCY SAFETY DAY”

A NEW PROJECT PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH
THE NYC FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE NYC BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Parents of Blind Children of NY today announced the debut of our newest project: Emergency Safety Day. The POBCNY is a non for profit parent advocacy organization. It is our mission to create access, to all parts of society, for blind and visually impaired children. This newest project is designed to reach out to a larger population of children with sensory impairments and has been specifically designed to be accessible to blind and visually impaired as well as deaf and hearing impaired youngsters. The goal of the project is to build confidence in children of differing abilities by providing them the necessary skills to respond appropriately in the face of what ever challenges they may encounter in their lives.

This project is made possible by a remarkable collaboration between the NYC Fire Department and the NYC Board of Education EVS (Educational Vision Services) and HES (Hearing Education Services) and promises to be a truly ground breaking event. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the veteran Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians and FDNY Fire Fighters as well as the BOE Teachers and Para-professionals who are contributing their time and considerable skill to this event, the youngsters involved will receive hands on training from the finest providers and the finest educators in the country.

The event is scheduled to take place on two separate days at different locations. The first event will take place on Wednesday July 16th at MS 368 located at 2975 Tibbett Ave. in the Bronx were we will have 110 students. The second event will take place on the following Wednesday July 23rd at PS 177 located at 56-37 188th Street in Queens where we will have 150 students.
