To a blind child, braille means literacy.
In America today, fewer than 10% of blind children are being taught braille.
To help change this shocking statistic go to our website
and donate to support the Braille Literacy Initiative.

THE POBCNY PROUDLY ANNOUNCES

“EMERGENCY SAFETY DAY”

A NEW PROJECT PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH
THE NYC FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE NYC BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Parents of Blind Children of NY today announced the debut of our newest project: Emergency Safety Day. The POBCNY is a non for profit parent advocacy organization. It is our mission to create access, to all parts of society, for blind and visually impaired children. This newest project is designed to reach out to a larger population of children with sensory impairments and has been specifically designed to be accessible to blind and visually impaired as well as deaf and hearing impaired youngsters. The goal of the project is to build confidence in children of differing abilities by providing them the necessary skills to respond appropriately in the face of what ever challenges they may encounter in their lives.

This project is made possible by a remarkable collaboration between the NYC Fire Department and the NYC Board of Education EVS (Educational Vision Services) and HES (Hearing Education Services) and promises to be a truly ground breaking event. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the veteran Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians and FDNY Fire Fighters as well as the BOE Teachers and Para-professionals who are contributing their time and considerable skill to this event, the youngsters involved will receive hands on training from the finest providers and the finest educators in the country.

The event is scheduled to take place on two separate days at different locations. The first event will take place on Wednesday July 16th at MS 368 located at 2975 Tibbett Ave. in the Bronx were we will have 110 students. The second event will take place on the following Wednesday July 23rd at PS 177 located at 56-37 188th Street in Queens where we will have 150 students.
